BARACK OBAMA'S FIRST HUNDRED DAYS Day 30 - February 18, 2009
President Obama said he was "hurt but not surprised" when Pope Benedict turned down the president's request to speak from the papal balcony in St. Peter's Square. "Something about abortion," the president said. Michelle Obama made a speech at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, but an aide had to be restrained when he tried to punctuate Michelle's remarks by striking the Liberty Bell. Michelle's listener applauded nonetheless. After a failed search to find a spiritual adviser to replace the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., President Obama said he would serve as his own adviser. Today he advised himself to seek repeal of the 22nd Amendment, limiting a president to two terms. "My work will not be finished," he said. "A higher power wills it." In an effort to curtail the White House's soaring social budget, the state dinner for the mayor of Chicago will have a guest list under a thousand. The dinner has raised eyebrows because the mayor isn't a head of state. President Obama scoffed at that notion. "I always considered him royalty," he said. The president argued that there would be great benefits if gasoline went to ten dollars a gallon. "People would spend less time at gas stations," he said, "where the fumes can be harmful, and you get stale cookies from those little marts."
