BARACK OBAMA'S FIRST HUNDRED DAYS Day 35 - February 23, 2009
In an unusual letter to the editor of the conservative National Review, President Obama objected to the use of the term Obamamessiah to describe him. He said he preferred it to be Obama, Messiah, which more closely resembled what he had in mind. "More distortion from the extreme right," he complained. The President dropped all requests for Europeans to send more troops to Afghanistan, saying he understood the objection that it reminded Europe of the Bush administration. "We have to be more sensitive," Obama said. He revealed that he'd been influenced by letters of protest sent by the "Obama, king of the world" fan club in Berlin. The White House announced that Michelle Obama would be sent on a good will tour of Texas. New White House press secretary Katie Couric said that the tour was part of "a new program sending the first lady to a number of foreign countries." The Energy Department announced a new subsidy program providing emergency shoe repair to Americans who run out of fuel while driving to work and have to walk the rest of the way. The department admonished participants in the program, though, to wear sunscreen, or lose their benefits. President Obama said he agreed with a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision, issued in San Francisco, dismissing a case against a Saudi terrorist plotting to destroy the Golden Gate bridge. The president agreed that the case had to be thrown out because the wiretapping equipment used to collect evidence did not meet federal fire standards. "We must protect the people," the president said. The president said that a new report showing a 1/100th of a degree drop in the temperature of Nigeria proves that his climate-change program is working. "We're scientists," he said. "Bush was a theologian."
