BARACK OBAMA'S FIRST HUNDRED DAYS Day 36 - February 24, 2009
President Obama said that, in order to shore up his national defense credentials, he might start wearing a military uniform. "All the emperors do it," he said. Michelle Obama said she was proud of her country when her husband was inaugurated 36 days ago, but that, with his poll numbers in decline, she's ashamed again. The first lady attributed her husband's decline in the polls to the continued existence of Fox News. President Obama called for an increase in federal spending on high-school education. The president said he had a dream - that one day all American high-school graduates would be reading at a tenth-grade level. A major teachers' union, in a sharp note to the White House, rejected the president's dream as "more worthy of Bush." The White House announced that President Obama will deliver the commencement address at the University of California at Berkeley in the spring. Mr. Obama will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Really Wonderful. A White House spokesman played down the debate at Berkeley over whether the word "really" went too far. The Obama administration will finance a major study to see if there is global cooling. Previously, Mr. Obama embraced global warming as a world concern. The new study will place him on every side of the issue, allowing the president to select from each point of view. An informed White House source said that the president felt he'd mastered that technique during the campaign.
