BARACK OBAMA'S FIRST HUNDRED DAYS Day 39 - February 27, 2009
The president assured reporters that the humility training he's receiving has started to pay off. He ordered the White House to put back the portraits of all the other presidents, which he'd originally ordered taken down. "Hey, they did some good stuff," Mr. Obama conceded. "Especially Abe. Not a bad guy." The president nominated Hillary Rodham Clinton to a seat on the Supreme Court, even though there are no openings. "He had to get her out of his hair," an aide said, off the record. "She kept sending him racy pictures of her in judicial robes." President Obama announced that he would make a state visit to Japan in March. But the president denied reports that he would apologize to the Japanese people for the American sailors who shot at their planes over Pearl Harbor. "It's just an idea at this stage," Mr. Obama said. "We're weighing it." The president signed the repeal of the No Child Left Behind act, a hallmark of the Bush administration. "We found a child left behind," the chief executive said. "So it was a failure." Michelle Obama apologized for cheering when gasoline went to ten dollars a gallon. "I just wanted people to learn a new life style," she explained, "the kind that people like me understand. But I shouldn't have cheered. I should have quietly celebrated." The president said he wasn't offended when, in a speech, Nelson Mandela referred to him as "the kid." Mr. Obama rescinded a presidential order requiring that a fully equipped gym be taken with him whenever he traveled. But reporters noted that he still would be traveling with the usual number of dumbbells.
