BARACK OBAMA'S FIRST HUNDRED DAYS

Day 40 - February 28,  2009

President Obama , resurrecting a campaign theme, said it was distressing that no picture on U.S. currency or coins looked like him.   As a result, he ordered a seven-cent coin to be minted, with his picture on it.   He said, "That's change I can believe in."

Mr. Obama again condemned the lyrics of the rap star Ludacris, but defended having him spend the night in the Lincoln bedroom.  "The man's hotel room was cancelled," the president reported.  "I'm here to help.  And he wants to write a song about Lincoln."

The president said he wanted to visit Moscow.  "I have so many old friends there," he said.  He declined to us the word "defector."

In a speech to educators, President Obama said he looked forward to the day when America didn't need military defense.  He said that might be Thursday.  Friday latest.

The White House announced that questions would have to be submitted in advance for all future presidential news conferences.  When reporters objected, the White House threatened to lift their press credentials.  "We define freedom of the press differently," said assistant chief of staff William Ayers.  The publisher of The New York Times said he fully understood, and respected the new order.

The Justice Department is framing legislation providing reparations for groups wronged by the United States since its founding.  An informed source said the groups would be selected by how they voted in the last election.

Michelle Obama hotly denied, once again, that her husband's election had been stolen.  But she ducked questions as to why half the registered voters in Chicago had been the subject of paid obituaries.  "Biological incapacity should not bar someone from voting," she argued, and stomped out of the room.
