TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 2009 DALLAS (AP) -- Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan is protesting again -- this time near former President George W. Bush's Dallas home. Sheehan led a brief protest of around 50 people Monday afternoon near the house. The former president and his wife moved into the four-bedroom home in a wealthy Dallas neighborhood in February. Will someone gently inform her that he isn't president anymore.
ROCHDALE, England, June 8 (UPI) -- The British Ministry of Justice is warning the country's prisons that prisoners have taken to using a 16th-century slang to hide talk about drug deals. The 500-year-old dialect, which is known as thieves' cant or rogues' cant, was believed to have been developed by medieval gypsies and adopted by a handful of scoundrels across England. You'd think the authorities would respect the desire to learn another language. These provincials.
MONDAY, JUNE 8, 2009 Cultural note from Britain's Sun: Armed cops patrolling Heathrow Airport have been banned from wearing tiny Union Jack badges in support of British troops. To think, this is the country that stood alone against the Nazis in 1940.
WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand man, spurned by the woman of his dreams, has come up with a novel way of disposing of the diamond engagement ring he bought her -- a treasure hunt. Anyone keen to pick up the ring, valued at NZ$5,000 ($3,268), will need to be in New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, on Saturday to join the hunt, the Dominion Post newspaper reported. You've got to admire the man's spirit. What woman could turn him down?
