MAY 1, 2009 Marriage news: CAIRO (AP) -- An 8-year-old Saudi girl has divorced her middle-aged husband after her father forced her to marry him last year in exchange for about $13,000, her lawyer said Thursday. There's just no stability anymore.
Crime news, from London's Telegraph: The character of Jack the Ripper was invented by journalists to sell newspapers, and his East End murder spree was actually the work of several unrelated killers, according to a new book. Senior police officers who investigated the 1888 prostitute killings were convinced they were not the work of a single man, research by the historian Dr Andrew Cook has uncovered. A letter boasting about the killings signed by a "Jack the Ripper" was forged by a journalist at the Star newspaper in an attempt to sustain sales that had been swollen by its salacious coverage of the crimes. Oh, come on. All the Obama voters know it was really Dick Cheney.
An obituary, maybe: Hans Holzer, whose investigations into the paranormal took him to haunted houses all over the world, most notably the Long Island house that inspired “The Amityville Horror,” died on Sunday at his home in Manhattan. He was 89. He'll be back.
APRIL 30, 2009 Latest legal news: KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Fast food chain McDonald's lost a lawsuit in Malaysia on Wednesday after an appeals court overruled a decision that its trademark had been infringed by a local restaurant called McCurry. "Where the learned judge, with respect, erred is to assume that McDonald's had a monopoly in the use of the prefix 'Mc' on a signage or in the conduct of business," Judge Gopal Sri Ram said, overturning a 2006 ruling in favor of McDonald's. I wonder how this will affect Big Mac's stock price.
