WHERE OBAMA STANDS – AT 11:03 A.M. ET:  President Obama has enjoyed some good weeks recently, what with contention within GOP ranks and a presumably improving economy.  His poll numbers were strengthening.

But is there a reversal of fortune?

Scott Rasmussen's daily tracker suggests that the president might be returning to the doldrums:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows that 25% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-four percent (44%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -19.

And...

Overall, 44% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's job performance. Fifty-four percent (54%) at least somewhat disapprove.

And get this:

With the perception growing that he will be the GOP nominee, Romney leads President Obama by five points in a hypothetical 2012 matchup. Today's numbers show Romney at 48%, Obama at 43%. That’s Romney’s largest lead since December.

We stress, of course, that a poll is just a snapshot in time, and tracking polls can swing pretty strongly.  Also, this is only one pollster.  We like Rasmussen, though, because he polls likely voters, probably the best measure of the electorate.

Now, Gallup shows a different result:  The Gallup poll has Obama's approval at 48%, disapproval at 44%.  However, Gallup polls among all adults, probably the least accurate manner of polling.
