SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – AT 7:14 P.M. ET:

EMBARRASSMENT – A march in Chicago today demanded that President Obama return to his home city to deal with the mad epidemic of murder that is gripping the place.  Led by Jesse Jackson, the march also demanded that the Department of Homeland Security patrol Chicago.  That's impractical, but what about the National Guard?  Gee, do you think even liberals are finally getting the idea that, when confronted with crime, you put up a powerful armed defense?  Let's hope.

REALLY? – A former Iraqi parliamentarian of proved reliability is telling Western websites that President Obama will soon meet with President Ahmadinejad of Iran to make a deal over Iran's nuclear program.  It didn't take long before some in the blogosphere compared the idea with Chamberlain going to meet Hitler in Munich in 1938, returning with "peace in our time."  We cannot confirm the accuracy of the prediction.  However, I have my doubts, as Iran will hold elections this spring and Ahmadinejad may well be out, depending on the will of the people who run the elections.

OH? – Outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta conceded today that enhanced interrogation techniques did provide information useful in the bin Laden operation.  I'm shocked, shocked.  But Panetta said we would have gotten the guy anyway.  I'm uneasy with these techniques, as are many others, but if the saving of human life is involved...  War is a pretty ugly thing.
