SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – AT 9:17 P.M. ET:

BACK HOME – President Obama has returned from his Hawaiian vacation.  Because he didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express, the vacation cost the American taxpayers about $7-million.  Hey, the man needs rest, doesn't he?  Meanwhile, the monarch's subjects will get their first taste of tax adjustments this week, as Social Security taxes rise.  As Leona Helmsley said, "Only the little people pay taxes."

INEVITABLE – Congressman Jose Serrano of New York, something of a firebrand Democrat, has introduced a bill in Congress to repeal the 22nd Amendment, limiting a president to two terms.  It was inevitable that someone would try to make Obama president for life.  Don't worry.  It ain't gonna happen.  Even if the proposal made its way through both houses of Congress – impossible with Republican control of the House – it would require 3/4 of the states to amend the Constitution.  Forget it.

HAGEL – ABC News is reporting that Democratic sources in the Senate say Chuck Hagel doesn't have enough Dem votes to confirm him as secretary of defense.  We have no additional sources on this.  But, if Hagel can't pull the Dem votes after being nominated by a Dem president, how could he get confirmed?  The Republicans dislike him, and would love to punish him for abandoning their party.  Maybe Al Gore could find some votes for Hagel in the Mideast.  Al has newfound friends there, you know.
