William Katz: Urgent Agenda

LET'S HAVE IT The AP reports that Republican officials are openly talking about a real-live convention this year, where the presidential nomination is decided on the floor. A lot of political types are already moaning and groaning. They point out that history hasn't been kind to nominees chosen in contested conventions. Lose the standard wisdom. A contested convention could be the greatest thing that happens to Republicans. Their candidates are fairly gray, the party does not exude excitement. A contested convention is conflict, drama, a reality show, a movie. It draws attention to the party. The last time the GOP had a contested convention was in 1948, so the rules of standard wisdom are a bit outdated. With the 24-hour news cycle, the Republicans can steal the show from the Democrats, at least for a time. If the convention is well-staged, the emerging winner can appear the dragon slayer. His acceptance speech, after all the blood is spilled, might easily attract an audience many times the norm. Hope for a good fight. Posted on January 17, 2008.
