JULY 24,  2008

9:40 a.m.    First tracker for the day is out.  Rasmussen has Obama up three.  Two days ago he had it tied.  There may be a slight uptick for Obama because of the avalanche coverage of his trip.   A new NBC/WSJ poll has Obama up by six.  No poll shows McCain ahead.

No need to panic.  It's very early in the game.  But McCain clearly hasn't gotten off the ground, and a number of gaffes and little errors contrast with Obama's smooth-running machine.

1:10 p.m.   From AP:  NEW YORK - The New York Times [NYT] Co. will increase the Monday-Saturday newsstand cost of its flagship paper by 25 cents to $1.50, the publisher said today.

Another brilliant move by a company whose second-quarter earnings dropped 82 percent over the year before.  This will just drive more readers away.

9:30 a.m.   The first tracker is out today.  Rasmussen has Obama up two over McCain.  Ras had the race tied yesterday.

Remember:  Small variations are inherent in polling.  Only trends over time tell the story.

9:14 a.m.   LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles shoppers soon won't hear the question, ''Paper or plastic?'' at the checkout line.  The City Council voted Tuesday to ban plastic shopping bags from stores, beginning July 1, 2010. Shoppers can either bring their own bags or pay 25 cents for a paper or biodegradable bag.

Another example of L.A. solving its overwhelming problems.  Nothing beats a great sense of priorities.

9:04 a.m.    From the AP:  "Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama toured Israel's Holocaust memorial Wednesday, laying a wreath in memory of the 6 million Jews who died and saying, 'Ultimately, this is a place of hope.''"

No it's not.  It's a place where we remember.  And among other things, we remember the cost of appeasement.

8:51 a.m.    From the L.A. Times:  "The top two floors of a Century City residential tower still under construction have been sold for a record $47 million to Candy Spelling, the widow of TV mogul Aaron Spelling."

I thought you'd like to know that the man took care of his widow.
